The holiday originally celebrated Buffalonians’ penchant for consuming ”thousands of pounds of chicken wings” at Anchor Bar every week. In 1964, the deep fried chicken wing with hot sauce sold in the Anchor Bar (located in Buffalo) became an instant hit. In 1977, the City of Buffalo declared July 29 Chicken Wing Day.
